Admissions at Sussex
Since its founding in 1971, Sussex School has been dedicated to providing a progressive learning environment that enables students to become motivated, mindful members of any community. Our flexible learning environment allows students to be engaged, work collaboratively as well as independently, and to find success in, and passion for, school, learning, and our world.

Sussex seeks to enroll students with intellectual curiosity who will bring a wide variety of talents, skills, interests, and backgrounds to the school. In building our educational community, we seek engaged, kind, open-minded, curious students who reflect our values of critical thinking, creativity, courage, and citizenship.

Sussex School does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national and ethnic origin, religion, sex, gender, or disability that can be reasonably accommodated, nor other legally protected status in the administration of its admissions policies, tuition assistance, or other school-administered programs.
After our admissions deadlines have passed, Sussex School continues to accept applications for admissions and tuition assistance on a rolling basis, pending space and available funds.

If a grade is currently full, families may still apply and be added to the waiting pool. When space opens in a class, our admissions committee reviews the completed applications in the waiting pool for that grade and extends an offer to a student. There is no weighted preference for the order in which applications come in for a class wait pool. The entire pool of applicants will be considered for an open space.
Key Dates
1. Campus Tours
Campus tours are the best way to see our school in action! Join a member of our team for an exploration of our physical space, programming, and what makes Sussex unique. During your tour, you will have a chance to ask lots of questions, see our classrooms, and meet some of our staff. If you tour during a school day, you will also get to observe some classes in action and hear from some of our current students as they share what they are working on.

While the best time to experience Sussex is during the school day, we do understand that it's not always possible for folks to get away in the middle of a workday. So, we offer a few evening tour options for those who need a later time. If you don't see a tour time that works within your schedule, please reach out to our Advancement Manager to set up another time.

Prospective students, siblings, grandparents, and other key family members are always welcome on the tour!
2. Admissions & Tuition Assistance
Once you have toured, learned about our progressive approach, and decided that Sussex is a good fit for your student and family, we encourage you to complete our online application. Our application includes:
-
Questions for Parents & Students (K-8th)
-
Teacher Recommendation (1st-8th)
-
Report Card, Progress Report, or Current School's Equivalent (1st-8th)
-
$90 Application Fee (K-8th)

We also have space within the application for you to upload any additional documentation that might help us better understand your learner, their passions, supports, and ideal learning environment.

Once you have submitted your application for admission, you will receive a confirmation email with a link to apply for tuition assistance if desired.
3. Shadow Days at Sussex
After you submit your application, we invite your learner to join us for a shadow day! Shadow days provide a unique opportunity for your student to spend a full or half day with us, experiencing a "day in the life". This is a great opportunity for prospective students to see how Sussex feels for them, meet students and teachers, and for us to better get to know your learner.

1st-4th Grade: We offer partial shadow days lasting 2-3 hours, depending on classroom schedules.

5th-8th Grade: Students join us for a full-day experience providing a mixture of core class time and electives.

Kindergarten: While we don't currently offer shadow days for Kindergarten, we do host a meet-your-class day in the spring for accepted Ks to join us on campus with their guardians to meet their teacher and each other ahead of the upcoming school year.

Shadow days are available for students who have already submitted their applications. Interested in a Shadow Day? Contact our Advancement Manager.
4. Decision
Admission to Sussex School is based on a careful weighing of the following factors and considerations:
-
The compatibility of the family's educational goals and values with those of the school.
-
An indication of the student’s ability and willingness to embody our values of critical thinking, creativity, courage, and citizenship.
-
Whether the student will benefit from attendance at Sussex and whether Sussex will benefit from the student's attendance; i.e., a mission-appropriate student reflecting the traits described above. The overall balance and well-being of the school community will be a top priority when determining how to fill openings.
-
An indication that the school can meet the needs of the student.
-
The readiness of kindergarten-age children for a full-day program.
-
The maintenance and creation of a diverse student body.
-
The family’s previous involvement with Sussex, including whether the applicant is a sibling of a current or alumni family or the child of an alumnus/ae.
-
Sussex cannot admit students whose enrollment would pose a direct threat to the health or safety of others or require a fundamental alteration of our program.
-
While expressly supporting alternative forms of education, Sussex School gives no preference to children from home-schooling situations or other alternative programs, nor will it make part-time enrollment a regular option.
-
Sussex School does not have a school nurse or other specially-trained personnel and is limited in enrolling students whose condition would cause an undue burden on our staff.

WAITING POOL
Sometimes, interest in a grade exceeds our enrollment capacity. In this case, we will place students in a waiting pool. When space opens in a class, the entire pool of applicants will be considered for that open space.
